Job Summary
The Senior Strategist (Education) will be responsible for improving learning outcomes for Fort McKay children and youth by planning and proposing an effective, superior-quality and innovative learning environment. This will be achieved by implementing a project to plan, design, manage and evaluate existing and new initiatives in facilities, educational programs and in the professional development of program administrators and teaching faculty, specifically for a Canadian Aboriginal community. This position will report directly to the Band Administrator / CEO for Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) and has the potential to become a permanent Director of Education position, depending on the success of this project and the demonstrated skills of the incumbent.
DUTIES
Specific responsibilities include;
- Consult with Fort McKay First Nation leadership, directors, children and youth, and citizens in collaboration with government and other stakeholders to address academic performance issues involving Fort McKay children and youth.
- Collaborate with Fort McKay First Nation leadership, directors, children and youth, and citizens in the development and implementation of remediation plans to improve academic performance.
- Develop and enhance educational programs to address the personal and academic development needs of Fort McKay children and youth.
- Work closely with administrators, program directors, residents, and other educational stakeholders to improve the learning environment within Fort McKay.
- Provide direction and leadership in developing innovative and effective educational programs that ensure the needs of current and future Fort McKay children and youth are being met.
- Improve the learning experience across the spectrum of educational programs, ensuring consistency with Fort McKay First Nation guidelines and any mandated and professional accreditation standards.
- Assist in the development of training and support, and also acts as consultant and advisor to ensure teaching and mentoring programs are promoted.
- Assess each training program's objectives, and advise how best to improve student learning experiences, while simultaneously ensuring that internal consistency and educational standards are met.
- Advise on the development, coordination, and delivery of curriculum that will reach more Fort McKay primary, elementary and high school students.
- Focus on the structural elements of our educational programs, including curriculum development, student evaluation, and educational outcomes assessment, which will ultimately improve the quality of Fort McKay’s education programs.
- Ensure education curriculum enables Fort McKay children and youth to learn and demonstrate achievement of general life skills and academic competencies.
- Work with Fort McKay First Nation leadership, directors, citizens and others to define and develop an institutional educational curriculum that promotes Fort McKay First Nation values and meets institutional and regulatory requirements.
- On a worldwide spectrum, research existing innovative educational programs with the view to developing unique responses/interventions that have promise for application to aboriginal environments in Canada, and in particular in Fort McKay.
- Assess such innovative programs and brief Fort McKay First Nation on the applicability and efficacy of similar or like programs in addressing the needs of Fort Mckay children and youth.
- Foster collaboration across aboriginal communities throughout Canada in the creation and implementation of effective educational initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Masters Degree in Education AND at least five years of teaching experience, preferably in an aboriginal environment, OR an equivalent advanced degree and experience.

- Demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious working relationships and effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues
- Ability to interpret and communicate to others complex policies and procedures in an academic environment
- Proven track record in exercising discretion and independent judgment effectively in decision-making processes
- Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications.
- Desired Requirements:
- Experience working with diverse groups in a team environment
- Knowledge and understanding of aboriginal learning environments
