This is a permanent, full-time position working forty (40) hours per week.
Under general supervision, identify pests, establish thresholds and subsequently monitor pest threshold damage levels, and implement specific control measures. In addition to pest management programming, educating the public in the fields of pest management and other environmental issues such as recycling and litter control is required. The work involves interacting with field and supervisory staff in the arboricultural, turf, horticultural, and community cleanliness sections of the Parks and Recreation Division to develop programs and to implement work procedures. The work also requires writing reports on research findings and consequent recommendations. Considerable independent judgment and initiative are necessary for successful implementation of the work.
Qualifications:
- University degree in Integrated Pest Management or Plant Protection Sciences or a related discipline; or a two (2) year IPM college diploma and three(3) years relevant work experience; or a one (1) year IPM certificate and five (5) years relevant work experience.
- A minimum one (1) year related field and research experience.
- Experience in Natural Resources enforcement under Provincial Acts and Municipal Bylaws an asset.
- Thorough knowledge of specific insects, diseases, invertebrates, vertebrates, and weeds and other unwanted plants, including life cycle and biology which are likely to affect vegetation in forest, parks and the urban environment.
- Thorough knowledge of Pest Management theory, practice, and techniques.
- Considerable knowledge and familiarity with current literature, trends and developments in pest control technology.
- Working knowledge of materials, methods, equipment, practices and tools involved in pest management situations.
- Ability to plan, develop and implement Municipal-wide best management programs.
- Ability to identify specific problems and determine effective solutions within policy and fiscal constraints, prioritization of needs may be necessary.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and studies.
- Ability to conduct field and technical research.
- Ability to communicate ideas and proposals effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, municipal officials, and the general public.
- Ability to estimate time and material requirements and costs related to program proposals.
- Must be willing to travel and stay overnight for work in rural areas for periods lasting up to 1 week at a time.
- Must meet the medical and physical fitness requirements needed to perform the work required of this position.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Pass RCMP criminal record check.
- Class five (5) Driver’s License.
- Valid Alberta Pesticide Applicators Certificate
Salary $35.33 (Probationary Rate)
$38.77 – $41.56 (Permanent Rates)
