Position Scope:
To facilitate adoption of industry leading HSE practices and behaviors at NACG's operating sites. Enable ownership of safety by project /site leaders and their teams by providing them with proactive coaching and expert HSE guidance. Long term success is demonstrated by consistent first quartile safety performance.
Responsibilities:
- Develop coaching relationships with project leadership team focused on helping them define and achieve their safety culture and continuously improve their safety performance. This includes the provision of ongoing feedback to these leaders.
- Lead by demonstrating the required behaviours, attitudes and mindset to further develop an already strong corporate safety culture.
- Facilitate and participate in the development and implementation of project / department HS&E plans, goals and objectives.
- Participate in the development of HS&E performance measures, understand the relative value, interpret results and coach/influence staff on how to improve HS&E performance.
- Evaluate and help project leaders develop communication strategies to inform and advance the adoption of the desired safety culture.
- Provide preparation assistance and feedback for leaders of HS&E meetings with employees and contractor staff.
- Provide HSE training, orient and personal coaching to site staff.
- Coordinate and participate in the analysis, design, development, delivery and evaluation of HS&E related training, as required.
- Provide support to project / department management and staff in the interpretation and application of HS&E rules, regulations and legislation.
- Facilitate the implementation and administration of corporate HS&E policies, processes and systems and monitor compliance with all relevant legislation, rules and regulations.
- Participate in developing safety portion of project execution plans owned by site and driving change in pursuit of the desired culture and goals.
- Provide consultation and assist in risk identification assessment, hazard analysis and job planning. Develop job aids and methods to assist site personal in these tasks.
- Review, provide coaching and support as required in incident investigation with the key objective of increasing the capabilities of operating personnel.
- Support as required for the return to work program as identified by the Health and Disability Manager.
- Compile and maintain records associated with the responsibilities of the position.
- Monitor site conditions and behaviours to identify risks and provide site leaders with input and recommendations to enhance safety performance.
- Conduct safety audits, coordinate audit recommendations, and assist in the development of corrective action plans in consultation with project / department management.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and adherence to all applicable legislation, standards and guidelines, and influence the adoption of standards when applicable.
- Maintain knowledge of current HS&E strategies, trends and technologies by developing industry working relationships and participating in exchange groups, associations and committees.
Qualifications:
- Certificate, diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety.
- Accreditation as an OH&S professional (i.e. CRSP).
- Minimum six (6) years experience in Health, Safety & Environment Management Systems.
- Industrial construction, pipeline, piling and/or mining industry experience preferred.
- Detailed working knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and other relevant Federal and Provincial Health & Safety legislation.
- Working knowledge of OH&S policies, standards, legislation and procedures pertaining to the industry.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including oral, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Understand and anticipate project / department (including safety) specific business drivers and influence.
- Ability to take initiative, to lead and motivate people.
- Ability to cooperate and deal tactfully with others.
- Strong leadership skills in the form of: strategic thinking ability, approach to relationship building, teambuilding, ability to engage people to think about their behavioral impacts, ability to position HS&E management system concepts within the business process context and the ability to build mutual trust and respect.
- Superior communication skills in the form of: ability to engage internal business partners to think creatively. Demonstrates sound judgment through effective communication of technical knowledge and passion for HS&E.
- Must have a continuing record of professional development.
