The Position
The Workplace Health and Safety Advisor is a professional position reporting to the Lead, WH&S Services North Zone. This position develops and manages various initiatives and/or programs and provides ongoing client support between individuals, departments, sites, and programs.
Provides leadership to develop a strategy for the coordination and delivery of educational tools/resources and leads the implementation of assigned projects and programs aimed at protecting and enhancing the health, safety, and wellness of AHS staff.
The position is also responsible for:
- Providing input into the needs of staff and line managers in relation to health promotion, safety, and hygiene, ergonomic and disease/injury prevention programs
- Implementation of program, policy, and procedural strategies to address occupational health and safety hazards on the site or in assigned responsibility areas
- Assisting with the promotion of WH&S programs and strategic priorities
- Delivering programs and services to staff and line managers to meet their needs, for example: occupational hygiene and safety issues, and consultation when required
- Measuring and monitoring the outcomes for current programs and new initiatives
- Education and training of staff in regulations, practices, procedures, policies, and programs
- Acting as an expert resources to OH&S committees, managers, and other stakeholders
- Fit testing
- Other consultation/duties as required
Qualifications:
- A minimum degree/diploma/certification in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline
- CRSP designation. If CRSP not present, commitment to complete within two years must be provided
- A minimum of three years experience in Occupational Health and Safety in an organization of significant size, complexity, and diversity is preferred
- Healthcare experience an asset
- A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development
- Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered
In addition, the incumbent will possess a record of accomplishment in the following areas:
- Extensive knowledge of the client group / function supported and best practices applicable to Workplace Health & Safety.
- Facilitation and/or coordination experience in project planning, execution, reporting, monitoring and evaluation.
- Experience managing physical and human resources and related financial / statistical information.
- Significant experience in problem solving, concerns resolution, investigation, and negotiation.
- Team leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others
- Experience in supervising and leading staff.
- Demonstrated ability to foster relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Effective communicator with strong organizational skills, influential skills, client focused orientation and commitment to providing quality services.
- Ability to relay or explain complex issues or difficult situations. Skills in negotiation, facilitation and conflict resolution are required.
- Participate in development and facilitating of presentations to convey information or transfer knowledge.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate change.
- Demonstrated competency with Microsoft office and other WHS software solutions.
