Environmental Engineer, Environmental Sustainability

Position Type/ Hours:
This is a permanent full-time position working thirty-five (35) hours per week.

Primary Location:  Canada-Alberta-Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
 
Role and Responsibilities

  • Provide short/mid/long term asset planning to Environmental Services’ Operating Branches (Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Underground Services and Solid Waste) and provide support in their operations and maintenance planning.
  • Participates in and supports the development of Environmental Services’ business plans and capital and operation budgets.
  • Supports Operating Branches activities and provides recommendations on process troubleshooting, optimization, program and procedure development and cost management.
  • Contribute to, or solely prepare, as required, internal Briefing Notes for the Leadership Team and/or Council and Council Reports for Council.
  • Support safety initiatives, conduct site inspections, and contribute to hazard assessments, incident investigation and corrective action recommendations.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with all Municipal, Provincial and Federal environmental legislation.
  • Participates in and supports the development of Environmental Sustainability’s Master Plan and an enterprise-wide Environmental Management System.
  • Undertake and/or supervise consultants engaged in environmental initiatives, programs and monitoring including, but not limited to, water conservation, effluent reuse, landfill gas management, site investigations and remediation, site closure plans and industry approval applications and Environmental Impact Assessments.
  • Proactively monitors environmental legislation for new or revised requirements impacting the Municipality’s activities and prepare mitigation plans in response.
  • Researches, evaluates and recommends innovative and leading practices and methods in environmental planning and compliance methods and systems.
  • Guides internal and external stakeholders in environmental management and compliance policies and practices.
  • Maintains and fosters relationships with external Provincial and Federal agencies with jurisdiction in Environmental Services’ operations and prepares related reports including release reporting, applications for or renewals of operating approvals, annual operating reports and NPRI reporting for submission to Alberta Environment, Alberta Health Services, Environment Canada and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and Alberta Health Services as required.
  • Contributes to regional stakeholder relationship management through co-ordination with RMWB Stakeholder Relations and participation on regional multi-stakeholder groups such as CEMA, WBEA and RAMP.
  • Leads RMWB consultation and compliance with government on legislative and regulatory requirements relating to Environmental Services’ operations.
  • Supports the Operating Branches on customer issues requiring technical analysis.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Environmental
  • Engineering, along with five (5) years experience.
  • Must be eligible for and register as an Engineer-in-Training or
  • Professional Engineer with APEGGA.
You will possess the following:
  • Strong analytical, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Class Five (5) Driver’s License.
  • Thorough understanding of legislation, standards and best  practices pertaining to environmental management, water treatment, wastewater treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection, and landfill operations. 
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Experience with SAP is an asset
