Overview:
 
From building roads and developing mine sites, the folks who work in our Mining division literally make the earth move to get at the resources the world needs to operate.  We are seeking an experienced Health, Safety and Environmental Protection Coordinator for our Fort McMurray based projects.
 
Working independently or with minimal direction/guidance, provides management support and assists operations staff to achieve the corporate goal of zero incidents.  The Coordinator has both a direct hands on role in managing health and safety on the worksite, and also acts as a resource to line supervisors to assist them in fulfilling their responsibilities
 
Role and Responsibilities

  • Conducts daily inspections of the work area and meet with the Supervision to discuss any potential problems: help to ensure the adequate supply of safety equipment, such as protective equipment, fire extinguishers, respirators, etc., monitor environmental hazards, such as excessive noise, toxic agents, etc.
  • Provides Supervision and employees with services and advice on safety, health and environment issues, conducts site safety orientation for new employees, coordinates and train the site rescue team.
  • Participates with the Safety Manager and other Project Safety Coordinators in the development, revision and implementation of procedures, standards, rules and regulations. Assists the Supervision to implement programs.
  • Builds and maintains a trusting relationship with Client, Subcontractors and Suppliers.
  • Verifies that work instructions (safe work procedures, job hazard analysis) are current and updated as the scope changes, responsible for “look ahead” mentality to eliminate risks.
  • Assists in the investigation of incidents for cause identification and recommends corrective action, engages fully in a lessons learned- continuous improvement process within the area of influence.
  • Administers first aid services to all persons on the worksite, as necessary.
  • Monitors and reports on the overall effectiveness of the safety program.
  • Audits the quality of the field level hazard assessment cards and incident investigation reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Helps to prepare site specific material for safety meetings and tool box talks.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
 
Requirements 
  • Possess current and valid Health and Safety designation issued from an accredited organization within Canada, eg: Construction Safety Officer, CCA Gold Seal, etc.
  • Traffic Management certification and experience
  • Possess Occupational First Aid Level II certification in BC
  • Has developed technical knowledge of common construction practices, techniques and equipment.
  • Strong computer background including experience with MS Word and Excel.
  • Has acquired a strong safety record and the ability to work with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to identify problems/issues, looks beyond the immediate problem to the wider implications and generates possible solutions and makes sound decisions using standard, and at times, less obvious solutions.
  • Capable of adapting information/style to the audience, explains difficult information clearly and influences and persuades others towards consensus agreement in straightforward situations.
  • Willingness to promote teamwork by motivating, coaching and guiding others.
