The Position
 
The Program & Events Supervisor reports directly to the Health and Wellness Senior Supervisor. This position will primarily involve the overall coordination of Health & Wellness events and the internal & external programming involving MacDonald Island Park.
 
They will be responsible for staff scheduling and training, program planning and implementation, program promotion as well as providing resources and support to guests and staff at MacDonald Island Park. The Program & Events Supervisor ensures that appropriate safety policies and procedures are being followed by staff and guests while displaying a high level of customer service in all our programs and services.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Create Health and Wellness programs for fitness centre users, group fitness participants, corporate fitness groups, school groups, user groups, and MacDonald Island Park staff
  • Develop partnerships with external fitness, recreation, and sport user groups to maximize the programming capabilities of MacDonald Island Park
  • Work in conjunction with other programmers and event planners within MacDonald Island to coordinate programming/events to maximize the use of Fitness related areas and to share resources
  • Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the fitness industry
  • Responsible for coordinating recruitment activities including  hiring, interviewing, and evaluating staff in accordance with HR policies
  • Responsible for the daily supervision, leadership, and task assigning of program instructors on and off site
  • Responsible for performance management of staff through ongoing feedback, coaching, and appropriate discipline including managing terminations as per the corporate and collective agreement policy
  • Identify staff training needs and conduct orientations as necessary
  • Assist with developing and implementing fitness program policies for staff and for users
  • Track inventory, supplies, and develop maintenance schedules and service cycles as per equipment guidelines
  • Ensure the safety of staff members and program participants and evaluate systems and procedures on a regular basis
  • Develop and maintain current, accurate , and confidential client files
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and update department on new programs, issues, trends, and successes
  • This position may also include approximately 5-10 hours dedicated to personal training and/or group fitness instruction per week
  • Assist with Fitness Specialist duties as needed
  • Complete additional projects as assigned by the Sport & Recreation Director and/or the Health & Wellness Senior Supervisor
Qualifications
 
Certifications:
  • Current Standard First Aid certificate or equivalent (including CPR C)
  • Current AED certificate
  • Fitness Leadership Certification (AFLCA)
  • Can-Fit-Pro or Certified Personal Trainer (CPT)
Education:
  • Degree or Diploma in Kinesiology, Physical Education, or related discipline, or equivalent education and experience
Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years experience working  in the fitness industry, preferably in a supervisory position
  • Strong background in fitness, programming and the health industry
  • Possess strong administrative skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal, written, and oral skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the operation of weight training and cardiovascular equipment, physical fitness, physiology, and anatomy
  • Good working knowledge in regards to a variety of sports and understanding basic strategy, muscle movement, and muscle development to specific sports
  • Ability to develop and foster partnerships with external clients
  • Participate in department meetings, provide updates, and liaise with fitness instructors and personal trainers
  • Ability to successfully evaluate program successes and failures
  • Possess strong coordination and leadership skills
  • Ability to coach, train, and guide staff and volunteers
  • Strong organizational skills and experience in risk management
  • Ability to work with Word, Excel, and Outlook, and Powerpoint
Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Nutritional consultation
  • Customer service and sales experience
  • Team building program experience
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
 
This position requires full time work (40 hours per week) and a flexible schedule including early morning, late night, and weekend work. This position may include heavy lifting of supplies and equipment and may be exposed to loud noises and will require an individual to be able to concentrate in a busy environment.
