The Position
 
The Health and Wellness Manager reports to the Director of Sport and Recreation. This position is responsible for the overall supervision and coordination of the fitness centre, group fitness room, indoor track, climbing wall and all internal and external health and wellness programs offered by MacDonald Island Park.
 
Responsibilities includes fitness programming, staff training, responding to the guests and community needs, promoting membership opportunities, climbing wall programming and risk management, as well providing resources and support to guests and staff at MacDonald Island Park.  The Health & Wellness Manager works closely with their direct reports to enhance and promote Health & Wellness services to the community by creating a variety of partnerships with key stakeholders including nonprofit groups, sport user groups, and schools.  The Health and Wellness Manager ensures that appropriate safety policies and procedures are also being followed by staff and guests.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Maximize use of all health and wellness amenities, maximize conversion efficiency, and appropriately schedule the use of all space
  • Assist with budget projections, monitor expenditures, and manage an annual operating budget while achieving maximum levels of service to our guests, user groups, and staff
  • Manage contracts associated with health and wellness programming and associations
  • Plan & implement several Health & Wellness events on an annual basis
  • Oversee all fitness & climbing wall programming
  • Make recommendations on equipment purchases and identify cost cutting solutions within the department
  • Assist with recruitment function in accordance with HR policies
  • Evaluate staff by providing on-going verbal feedback and periodic, written job performance evaluations
  • Responsible for the daily supervision, leadership, task assigning, and scheduling of the fitness centre staff, fitness class instructors, personal trainers, nutritionists, and contractors
  • Identify staff training needs and conduct orientations as necessary
  • Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the fitness industry
  • Assist with developing and implementing fitness centre policies for staff and for users
  • Track inventory, supplies, and develop maintenance schedules and service cycles as per equipment guidelines
  • Responsible for encouraging the development of and maintaining effective and co-operative working relationships with officials and representatives of user groups, guests, and members of the public
  • Ensure the safety of staff members and fitness users and evaluate systems and procedures on a regular basis
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and update department on new programs, issues, trends, and successes
  • Create programs for fitness centre users, group fitness participants, corporate health and wellness groups, various user groups, and MacDonald Island Park staff
  • Liaise with various stakeholders and support the development of the Climbing Wall along with establishing programming opportunities and developing risk management procedures associated with the Climbing Wall
  • Complete additional projects as assigned by the Director of Sport and Recreation
 
Qualifications:
 
Certifications
  • Current Standard First Aid certificate or equivalent (including CPR C)
  • Current AED certificate
  • Fitness Leadership Certification (AFLCA)
  • Can-Fit-Pro or Certified Personal Trainer (CPT)
 
Education:
  • Degree or Diploma in Kinesiology, Physical Education, or related discipline, or equivalent education and experience
 
Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in the health and wellness industry
  • Strong background in fitness, programming and the health industry
  • Experience working in a climbing wall environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal, written, and oral skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the operation of weight training and cardiovascular equipment, physical fitness, physiology, and anatomy
  • Good working knowledge in regards to a variety of sports and understanding basic strategy, muscle movement, and muscle development to specific sports and recreational activities
  • Event coordination and planning
  • Possess strong coordination and leadership skills
  • Ability to coach, train, and guide staff and volunteers
  • Strong organizational skills and experience in risk management
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Ability to work with Word, Excel, and Outlook, and PowerPoint
 
Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Nutritional consultation
  • Customer service and sales experience
  • Team building program experience
 
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • This position requires full time work (40 hours per week) and a flexible schedule including early morning, late night, and weekend work.
  • This position may include heavy lifting of supplies and equipment and may be exposed to loud noises and will require an individual to be able to concentrate in a busy environment.
