General Description:

The Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is seeking a motivated and analytical individual who is flexible and works well in a team environment to fill the full-time permanent position of Business Analyst, reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Business Development.

This is an important role within the Business Development Department. The department fulfills the following four main activities for FMFN: managing a portfolio of 9 FMFN owned companies, forming new companies and investments, negotiating agreements with industry, and implementing agreements with industry.

This role will be to play a key role in the department’s four activities by working with the Senior Manager and CEO, Business Development to meet the department’s objectives. The position will be responsible for their own projects as well as supporting on larger ones. They must be able to quickly and easily collect and analyze information and then provide recommendations to FMFN’s executive team. The role will also play a key role in the growth and expansion of FMFN’s business and investment portfolio. The individual must be able to work well under pressure and meet or exceed revenue targets which have been set for them.

This is a permanent full-time position and is based on seventy-five (75) hours bi-weekly. Flexibility to perform work assignments extending to beyond the standard work week including evenings and weekends may be required from time to time.


1. Business Analysis: 50%

  • Evaluate new business and investment opportunities which are pitched to the Nation and make a recommendation to the executive team on whether or not to proceed
  • Evaluate and provide recommendations of the services and products provided by the FMFN’s portfolio companies and identify how they can better align with customer’s needs. Provide recommendations for doing business 
  • Identify new products or services which can be provided by the FMFN’s portfolio companies
  • Identify new companies which can be formed by the Nation to capture market opportunities
  • Identify new revenue generating investment opportunities for the FMFN
  • Provide financial analysis of the Nation’s portfolio companies as well as contracts, customer and markets

2. Business Development: 20%

  • Evaluate new business opportunities which are presented to the Nation and make a recommendation to the executive team on whether or not to proceed
  • Oversee the process of forming new companies from due diligence through to startup 
  • Oversee new investments from due diligence through to capital deployment
  • Facilitate the revenue growth of the Nation’s business portfolio companies through seeking out and obtaining new contracts
  • Work with the co-owners in the Nation’s business portfolio to continuously grow and improve the shared companies
  • Support the executive team in the existing underperforming businesses or investments

3. Contract Management: 20%

  • Support the executive team in the negotiation of new agreements with industry
  • Monitor existing agreements to ensure both parties are meeting their commitments. Where lapses are found, work with all involved parties to ensure they are corrected
  • Implement agreements with industry including provisions for business, workforce development, education and environment
  • Execute all of the Nation’s required tasks per multiple agreements under strict timelines 
  • Monitor and ensure all required tasks for corporate compliance are being met within the Nation’s business portfolio
  • Support the negotiation and structuring of new commercial contracts relating to the Nation’s new business and investment ventures

4. General Responsibilities: 10%

  • Respond to general inquiries about the Nation’s business activities
  • Market and communicate the Nation’s business activities to industry and customers as needed
  • Support all department activities and tasks
  • Work with other departments in the Nation
  • Participate and support community events in Fort McKay
  • Represent the Nation at conferences, trade shows and events
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications Requirement:

  • Bachelor Degree in Business, Law, Finance or related field 
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a similar role
  • MBA in Business, Finance, Supply Chain or Law is strongly preferred 
  • Experience with M&A, private equity, commercial law or the oil and gas industry
  • Experience with financing, banking and investing
  • Strong financial analysis, modeling and understanding of accounting 
  • Strong writing and research skills 
  • Some experience working in an aboriginal organization, preferred
  • Knowledge of First Nation and Aboriginal culture and tradition an asset.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to realities of First Nation people and communities an asset
  • Ability to speak either Dene or Cree language an asset 
  • A valid class 5 drivers’ license as travel will be necessary
  • Experience in First Nations community is a definite asset

  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Monday-Friday work week will be in Fort McKay, Alberta
  • This is not a fly-in-fly-out position
