Job Description

Responsibilities:

  1. Under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Access & Disclosure, Health Information Management, Provincial Operations, the Access & Disclosure Specialist is responsible for processing requests for health information. Requests are received for health information from individual and third party stakeholders both internal and external to Alberta Health Services.
  2. The A & D Specialist also manages and processes production orders, subpoenas, search warrants and court orders as issued by the judicial system.
  3. Access & Disclosure Specialists must give full attention to detail and recognize the importance of adhering to legislative requirements including the Health Information Act (HIA), other related legislation and established Alberta Health Services (AHS) standards, policies, guidelines and procedures.
  4. This includes accessing health information in multiple formats – paper, electronic and microfilm.
  5. The individual must maintain a high standard of quality ensuring the correct information is released within established turnaround times.

Requirements:

  • Certification by the Canadian College of Health Information Management is mandatory, within one year period from date of hire and active certification is required for the duration of employment within Alberta Health Services
  • Graduation from an accredited school for Health Information Management professionals is mandatory
  • Sound knowledge of medical terminology
  • English language skills in reading, writing and oral communication, required
  • Medical Terminology Certificate (demonstrated/ability to apply knowledge by testing)
  • Proven typing skills of 55 WPM
  • MS Office skills (demonstrated through testing)
  • Fundamental understanding of privacy/confidentiality and access and disclosure practices in relation to health information
  • Preference given to applicants with SharePoint, call center and MS Office experience

  • All professions must provide proof of licensure or registration with the approved Alberta regulatory college, prior to commencing duties with AHS where applicable: Regulated health professions under the Alberta Health Professions Act and Health Disciplines Act will be required to provide an original copy of a valid practice permit before commencing their duties with AHS. Other professions governed by government acts, college or regulatory body requirements may be required to provide additional documentation.

Additional Information:

In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Fort McMurray Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $12,480. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.
