Job Description

Summary:

This is a permanent full-time position working forty (40) hours per week within the Solid Waste Branch of the Engineering and Environmental Services Department. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit. This position is located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s urban centre.
Under general supervision, this individual is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, customer service, staff management, safety, and security for all waste diversion facilities and operates assigned heavy equipment/vehicles in compliance with applicable bylaws and regulations.

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise and oversee the daily operations of the MRF, depots, public drop-off area, compost facility, and HHW facility.
  2. Ensure detailed records for all service levels are maintained.
  3. Review all daily deposit and charge account reports on a daily basis and verify that cash floats balance at the end of every shift.
  4. Prepare and submit RCMP reports for any illegal activity that occurs at the regional landfill site pertaining to transactions and traffic infractions.
  5. Address public and waste haulers enquiries, concerns, or violations affecting policies/codes/schedules and take action to correct deficiencies as directed or outlined within established policies or procedures. 
  6. Coordinate facility maintenance to ensure that facilities are maintained at, or above, industry standards.
  7. Ensure an adequate inventory of equipment and supplies is maintained. 
  8. Train all staff members and assist/advise in career development.
  9. Assist with preventive maintenance programs for all assets.
  10. Ensure operations comply with provincial approval standards.
  11. Operate recycling and transfer equipment of various sizes as required.
  12. Assist with waste diversion education and awareness program and coordination between various stakeholders to promote and provide optimum waste diversion programs within the region.

Requirements:

  • High School or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • CCC (Composting Council of Canada) composting certification or SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) recycling certification is an asset, and must be obtained within two (2) years from date of hire.
  • Four (4) years’ related experience in waste management or recycling operations is required, and at least two (2) years in a foreman or comparable leadership role.
  • Other SWANA Certifications are assets.
  • WHMIS, Occupational First Aid and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificates are required.
  • Supervisory skills; leadership training; and experience in recycling, composting and landfill operations are assets.
  • Valid Class Three (3) Alberta driver's licence with Q endorsement is required.
  • Ability to understand and execute verbal directions and practice safe working procedures.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access, Outlook, etc).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and lead a team of workers in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Must be able to identify hazardous waste symbols and signs, and operate various recycling and transfer equipment.
  • Ability to establish/maintain a cooperative relationship with daily contacts.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain positive leadership within a work group, and assist with staff development and training objectives.
  • Must be medically and physically able to complete all duties of the job.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions (immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions).
  • Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check for review and acceptance. 

Salary:

  1. $46.75 (Start Rate) 
  2. $55.07 (Permanent Rate)
  3. Permanent rate effective after twelve (12) months of employment.
