Job Description

Working under the general supervision of the Patient Care Manager and the direct supervision of the Clinical Coordinator or Charge Nurse, the Unit Clerk is primarily responsible for:

  1. Processing and ensuring the completion of physician’s written orders for a wide variety of tests; procedures; follow- up appointments; etc.
  2. Being the main contact in matters concerning the efficient administration of the unit. Nursing and other health disciplines rely on the unit clerk for their knowledge of overall unit operations
  3. Plays a key role in helping to foster a team environment in the unit by facilitating communication between nursing and other health disciplines, departments, patients and families; and maintaining confidentiality of patient information
  4. Providing a variety of clerical support duties for department. This includes but is not limited to; collecting and recording stats; taking minutes at staff meetings and posting the minutes; ordering supplies if needed; answering phones, etc.
  5. Providing support to the cancer clinic on a weekly basis. This includes but is not limited to: Answering phone calls; ordering supplies; becoming competent in the computer program called ARIA; assisting nurses when needed; etc.
  6. The unit Clerk helps to free nursing and other health disciplines to focus on direct patient care. This position is a major asset to the smooth and efficient operations of the unit.
     
    Requirements:
  • High School graduate (Grade 12)
  •  Recommended successful completion of a recognized Unit Clerk Course or Equivalence
  •  Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively to others, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to prioritize work effectively, cope with frequent interruptions, noise, and other nearby distractions
  • Basic typing and computer skills is required
  • Ability to remain focused in stressful acute patient situations

  • All professions must provide proof of licensure or registration with the approved Alberta regulatory college, prior to commencing duties with AHS where applicable:Regulated health professions under the Alberta Health Professions Act and Health Disciplines Act will be required to provide an original copy of a valid practice permit before commencing their duties with AHS. Other professions governed by government acts, college or regulatory body requirements may be required to provide additional documentation.

Additional Information:

In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Fort McMurray Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $12,480. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.
