Job Description

The Counsellor is responsible to provide counselling services to residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Counselling practice will meet professional and ethical standards. Primary responsibilities of this position include:
Program Development: Assists the Supervisor, Counselling Services with program service delivery in daily operations and administration. Researches and assists with the development and implementation of strategies, tools, administrative directives based on best practices for continuous improvement. Engages in continuous learning to maintain professional designations and registration
Departmental Advice: Acts as a departmental advisor to assist in program planning and evaluation for counseling services and FCSS as requested. Provides consultation services to organizations and community groups.
Service Delivery: Provides confidential intake, referral, advocacy, and counseling services to children, teens, adults, families, and couples. Utilizes various counselling modalities/approaches to manage complex and multifaceted issues. Maintains ongoing client risk assessments and contact notes. Works with community stakeholders to address identified social challenges. Supports Emergency Social Services in their disaster response. Develops and enhances community partnerships and supports community projects.
*May require use of a personal or municipal vehicle for business travel purposes.

Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work, Counselling or Psychology.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a counsellor.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
  • Registration in Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW), College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) and/or registration with an appropriate professional body is mandatory.
  • Experience working in a public sector environment considered an asset.
  • Counselling knowledge and techniques relating to individuals, couples and families, risk assessment, general case management ability.
  • Ability to recognize psychiatric illness (DSM-IV-TR).
  • Sound, practical judgement, empathy, using independent decision-making.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Class Five (5) driver's licence is preferred as incumbent may be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use.
  • Willing and able to provide a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector for review and acceptance.
