Job Description

This is a permanent full-time position working eighty-four (84) hours biweekly within the Fleet Services Branch of the Public Works Department. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit. This position is located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo's urban centre.

Job Summary:
Under minimal supervision, is a working Foreman that provides short/long term planning and directs employees and contractors to ensure cost, quantity and quality control for all fleet programs, preventative maintenance, and asset management in accordance with municipal policies and provincial regulations.


  • Organizing and performing a variety of work involving corrective and preventative maintenance, repairs, alteration and installation of systems and equipment appropriate for heavy duty and automotive trade.
  • Oversee employees, contractors and contracts for the acquisition, mechanical repairs, and disposal of vehicle and equipment through preventative maintenance and asset management programs.
  • Develop and maintain task lists for preventive maintenance programs and information related to plan estimates for labour, materials, services and equipment.
  • Monitor plans for variances and work with contractors to develop recovery.
  • Develop and maintain medium and long term plans related to fuel purchases, continuing maintenance requirements, preventive maintenance and maintenance projects, seasonal work, capital projects.
  • Assist Fleet Supervisor with procurement of equipment and life cycling.
  • Assist with establishing and administering divisional policies and procedures to maintain a safe workplace environment, ensuring compliance to Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Compile equipment records; including hours in service, distances, maintenance, repairs required, fuel usage and other data, to produce operating reports and statistical data.
  • Attend accident scenes to perform collision and vehicle damage investigations; take witness statements, photographs, work closely with involved agencies, prepare and issue related reports.
  • Perform mechanical inspections in the field to determine repairs are complete and consistent with invoices for services prior to authorizing payment and provide all in-house expertise in the mechanical field.
  • Research new technology, prepare specifications for new acquisitions, conduct pre-delivery inspections, determine life cycles, and lead surplus disposal process. Create and maintain warranty, preventative, and corrective maintenance repair schedules.
  • Determine the cost effectiveness, timing and coordination of major equipment mechanical overhauls.
  • Inspect work to ensure that trade standards and compliance with safety regulations and code requirements are met.
  • Assist in the development of Fleet Services' annual goals/objectives; assist with long and short term plans, annual budgets, business and strategic plans.
  • Work with Light Fleet and cover with Equipment deliveries.
  • Perform other related duties as required.


  • Alberta or Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician Certificate (On Road and Off Road)and Journeyman Automotive Technician Certificate are required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years' progressively responsible experience in the daily administration of fleet management services in a multi-faceted, mechanical maintenance, technical service delivery environment working with a large and diversified fleet of vehicles and equipment including a minimum of one (1) year in a leadership capacity.
  • Must obtain Alberta Class Three (3) driver's licence within ninety (90) days of start date.
  • Proven experience with computers, Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to learn and maintain a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Must obtain First Aid CPR Level A Certification within six (6) months of start date.
  • You will possess the following:

  • Proven ability to formalize, prepare and present technical and statistical reports.
  • Ability to develop short and long term plans based on statistical data, city growth projections and technological changes.
  • Ability to re-prioritize on a regular basis to meet service requirements.
  • Will be required to work in all weather conditions and occasionally unsanitary conditions (immunizations are strongly recommended).
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all of the duties of the position.
  • Flexibility to perform duties after regular hours, on weekends and holidays, as required, to meet the scheduling and community needs.
