Job Description

These are permanent full-time positions working eighty-four (84) hours biweekly within the Fleet Services Branch of the Public Works and Transit Services Department. These positions are within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit. These positions are located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s urban centre.

Operates and performs minor maintenance on assigned equipment including towing and recovery equipment, dump trucks, front end loaders, flusher trucks, sanders, street sweepers, and man lift trucks used in year round maintenance and/or construction of streets, roads, and facilities. Will be required to transport heavy equipment between locations. Occasionally performs heavy manual labour for extended periods of time in various weather conditions. Responsible for performing duties as assigned while protecting and caring for the safety of others and the usefulness of the equipment to avoid damage to publically owned equipment and municipal infrastructure. Will perform semi skilled manual labour using a variety of hand/power tools and equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Operation of light equipment including loader, forklift, skid steer, sweeper, and gravel truck.
  • May be required to move equipment in the yard and throughout the Municipality.
  • Transporting heavy equipment (no operating functions).
  • Assisting mechanics with fuel and lube services as required.
  • Performing minor operational repairs.
  • May be required to assist the mechanics in major equipment repairs.
  • Assisting equipment operators with blade changes.
  • Ensuring tow vehicle is staged for rapid response.
  • Working with Law Enforcement and Regional Emergency Services to assure public safety during towing.
  • Loading and unloading trucks as required.
  • Responsible for keeping yards and storage facilities clean and tidy.
  • Utilizing hydrovac equipment at wash bays and various facilities.
  • Assist with snow dump facilities.
  • Cleaning, servicing and maintaining assigned equipment.
  • Completing daily time sheets and equipment reports as requested, detailing the condition of equipment and work performed and completing additional forms/reports as requested.
  • Reporting maintenance problems or any other undesirable condition such as an accident or incident which resulted in damage to equipment to the Supervisor immediately.
  • Being familiar with methods and procedures, quality standards and safety manuals relative to each job being performed.
  • Will be required to perform general labour duties.
  • Will be required to perform other related duties as required.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Valid Alberta Class One (1) driver’s licence with Q-Endorsement is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ combined experience in the operation of commercial trucks, tow trucks, and light equipment (loader, forklift, skid steer, sweeper, gravel truck, etc.) is required.
  • Experience operating related heavy equipment (excavator, grader, backhoe, etc.) would be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in a mechanical maintenance role is a definite asset.
  • Ability to obtain Standard First Aid CPR Level A Certification within ninety (90) days.
  • Defensive Driving Course is an asset.
  • Previous experience with vehicle towing and recovery is required.
  • Previous experience in Emergency Response in relation to motor vehicle accidents and towing is an asset.
  • Understanding vehicle accident handling protocol is an asset.
  • Equipment Field Testing and/or competency testing may be required as part of the interview evaluation.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety precautions, methods, and techniques employed in Fleet operations of vehicles, trucks and equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be willing to work a rotating shift schedule outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Potential for unsanitary conditions - immunizations are strongly recommended.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all responsibilities of the position.
  • WHMIS training is required (or must be completed within 30 days).
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods training is required (or must be completed within 90 days).


Pay Level:

PL 6

Salary Range:
$ 37.24 (Start Rate)
$ 43.62 (Permanent Rate)
*Permanent rate effective after twelve (12) months of employment.
